Special Parade Views for 5,000 Hit Hard by Hurricane

They might have lost their homes or their possessions, but 5,000 New Yorkers whose lives were upended by Hurricane Sandy can enjoy a free ride to the Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade and watch the action from reserved bleachers along the route, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Macy?s announced on Thursday.

?Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy friends and family and reflect on life?s blessings,? Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement, ? but this will be a particularly difficult holiday for many New Yorkers who suffered terrible losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy. We hope that taking part in a tradition like the Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade will make their holiday just a little brighter.?

The 5,000 spectators will be chosen by local elected officials in the neighborhoods hardest hit by the storm, the mayor said.

The disaster victims and thousands of other paradegoers will be treated to the sight of the Smurf Mushroom float, a recreation of an old showboat, the Morton Salt home-baked goodness oven and a float celebrating Fall Frozen Fun featuring Tom Turkey as a hockey goalie.

The Aflac insurance company duck will also be on hand.

?For 86 years, Macy?s Thanksgiving Day Parade has served as a beacon of hope, renewal and entertainment for New Yorkers and the nation,? Amy Kule, the parade?s executive producer, said in a statement. ?It is our ultimate hope that we can provide some comfort to those most affected by Hurricane Sandy.?

City Councilman James S. Oddo, who represents some of the most devastated areas of Staten Island and had been critical of the mayor for his reluctance to cancel the New York City Marathon, called the invitation ?a wonderful gesture.?

?I have some people in my district who are going through an extremely difficult time,? he said. ?If you can give them one really nice day, something they can share as a family and use that to pick their spirits up as we tackle the harder aspects of this, I say kudos to the administration and to everybody associated with the parade for thinking of it.?
