IRL: gfxCardStatus, Nyko Charge Base 3 for PS3 and the OG iPad

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we're using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Different strokes for different folks. While Darren may have long since sworn off tablets as productivity machines, our very own Billy Steele (a designer by trade, don'tcha know) has been using one to workshop projects with clients. For Darren, anyway, productivity means having a laptop with a discrete GPU at the ready -- except for when the GPU drains his battery life, which is where an app called gfxCardStatus comes in. Rounding things out, we've got Jason Hidalgo talking up the different ways he's attempted to charge his needy PS3 controllers. All that and more after the break.

HP Envy 4 shows up for pre-order on HP's China site, priced as low as 5,499 yuan

HP Envy 4 shows up for pre-order on HP's China site, priced as low as 5,499 yuan

A few days ago, HP accidentally listed the unannounced Envy 4 and 6 on a support page within its American website. Fast forward to today, and the company's Chinese site is following in similar footsteps -- though, this time around exposing a couple more details. HP's online shop in China shows a total of six different Envy 4 models, starting with the 1005tx / 1019tx, followed by the mid-level 1004tx / 1021tx and ending with what appears to be the higher-end Ultrabooks: Envy 4-1006tx and 1021tx, which are both priced at 6,299 yuan (around $1,000). As expected, the pair sitting at the bottom of the pile is the lesser-specced of the bunch, revealing an Intel Core i3-2367M CPU, while the top-shelf machine (1021tx) is listed as sporting a Core i5-2467M. Taking into consideration all the recent leaks, it's now only a matter of time before Meg Whitman & Co. make these 14-inch skinny laptops an "official" reality. Until then, those living in China can try and pre-order one of these by pointing your browser toward the source link below.

ASUS Zenbook Primes with 1080p IPS panels and (probably) Ivy Bridge are real, coming to Taiwan in June

Refreshed ASUS Zenbooks with 1080p IPS panels and (probably) Ivy Bridge are real, coming to Taiwan in June

We've already seen spec sheets suggesting that ASUS's 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch Zenbooks are being fattened up for a major update, but now Engadget Chinese has glimpsed the new devices in their cold aluminum flesh. Tentatively called Zenbook Primes, or the UX21A and UX31A respectively, they both have 1920 x 1080 IPS panels with a matte finish and excellent viewing angles (please, ignore the dumb 1024 x 768 screen-saver in the pic, it doesn't do it justice). Judging from the fact that ASUS refused to let us go hands-on in case we identify the internals, we can be pretty confident that these beauties are running on next-gen ULV Ivy Bridge processors, which -- unlike their more powerful brethren -- have yet to be formally announced. We asked if there'd be room for discrete graphics, such as one of NVIDIA's new Kepler mobile GPUs for Ultrabooks, and were told that "anything is possible." Responses were equally vague when it came to global availability, because apparently the devices are awaitng clearance from Intel. All we know is that they should be out in Taiwan in June, likely with similar price tags to their predecessors.

Alesis Q25

Many MIDI controllers these days come with plenty of knobs and sliders. But the Alesis Q25 ($179.99 list) harkens back to a different era, one of simplicity of design?except updated for today's laptop and iPad-driven music studios. The Q25 ?is a 25-note, velocity-sensitive MIDI keyboard with a built-in USB interface. It promises accurate MIDI control, portability, and not much else. As long as your needs are modest, it's a solid controller at a bargain price.

Design, Controls, and Connections
The Q25 measures 19 by 7.25 by 2.38 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.6 pounds. It's made entirely of black matte plastic, with non-weighted synthesizer keys in white and black, and slightly tapered, rounded edges that lend the Q25 a feeling of solidity and comfort when transporting it. The controls really are simple: To the left of the 25-key key bed are old-style, plastic pitch bend and modulation wheels. The pitch bend has a center detent and returns to the center as soon as you lift your finger, while the modulation wheel has no detent and no spring-loaded return; it stays in position wherever you leave it.

Above the two wheels are Octave Down, MIDI/Select, and Octave Up buttons. Finally, there's a data entry slider that feels a little cheap and scratchy when moved in its recessed vertical slot. There are no other programmable knobs, sliders, pads, or transport controls?this should be obvious at a glance, but controllers like the M-Audio Oxygen 25 ($149.95 list) trade a little extra depth and a higher street price (more on that later) for much more in the way of MIDI control.

Alesis throws in a USB cable and a Quick Start guide, and also bundles a DVD copy of Ableton Live Lite Alesis edition, which gets you started recording and sequencing music. The Q25 is class-compliant, so you don't need to install a driver on the PC or Mac; just plug it in and start playing. There's no aftertouch, though. The Q25 works fine with an iPad as long as you buy the Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit , which comes with two adapters, one of which mates a dock connector to a USB port. Unfortunately, the Q25 doesn't work with the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI , since that interface works with a MIDI cable only, and therefore requires some kind of external power for the controller; the Q25 doesn't come with a power adapter in the box.

Alesis Q25

Testing and Conclusions
I had no problem playing and recording MIDI data in Apple Logic Pro 9, Steinberg Cubase 6.5, and Cakewalk SONAR X1 using the Q25. The Octave Down and Octave Up buttons made it easy to jump around in the keyboard range, depending on the sound I wanted, and the velocity sensitivity was well tuned and felt natural to my fingers. Playing the keys resulted in no untoward vibrations or rattles, and the Q25 stayed put on my desk, thanks to its well-positioned rubber feet. One glitch: I noticed that after several weeks of testing, the lower B key began to rattle a tiny bit internally, although the rest of the key bed remained rattle-free.

You probably wouldn't want to knock the Q25 around in the back of a van on an extended live tour, at least without a (very) well-padded case of some kind. But as a small desktop controller, or as one you could throw in a bag and bring to a hotel or a friend's house, the Q25 does the job with aplomb. And at a street price hovering in the $70 range, it's tough to find something like it that's this inexpensive. The M-Audio Oxygen 25, now on its third generation, tends to cost $90 to $100 on the street, despite its lower list price. The Oxygen 25 offers much more in the way of real-time controls, thanks to its array of knobs, sliders, and transport buttons. The Oxygen 25 is also slightly thinner than the Q25, although it's deeper, and requires more of that crucial space between your desktop PC keyboard and monitor.

Corn pricing affected by global warming, federal mandates not helping, study finds

Researchers out of Purdue and Stanford University have found evidence that small temperature increases over the next two decades could have a surprisingly drastic impact on the volatility of corn prices. And federal biofuel mandates may make things worse.

Geothermal, nuclear, wind, natural gas, soybean biodiesel, corn ethanol ? these are just some of the possible ways to thwart greenhouse gas emissions that spur global warming. Yet each technological option is far from perfect, and understandably, harbors its own unique complications.

A recent study published in Nature Climate Change, illustrates such a complication for biofuels derived from corn grown in the United States. Scientists found that, over the next two decades, climate change will probably increase the volatility of corn prices, even more so than expected factors like oil prices and trade policies. Biofuel mandates affect volatility too, and the study also suggests that such federal mandates could actually amplify the effect of rising temperature on the pricing of crop from the US corn belt.

"Frankly, I was surprised that climate had the largest effect of these three influences," said Noah Diffenbaugh of the Stanford?Woods Institute for the Environment in a recent Stanford Press Release. "These are substantial changes in price volatility that come from relatively moderate global warming."

This research, funded by the Department of Energy, illuminates two interrelated problems. The first: even if climate change stays within the internationally established "safe" limit of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit above preindustrial temperatures, a smaller temperature change could still drive up the frequency of severe heatwaves in the US, which would in turn sharply increase the volatility of corn yields, the study suggests.

The second is the constraining effect federal biofuel mandates have on the corn market. This has already been demonstrated before, as the mandates encouraged farmers to plant more corn instead of, for example, soybeans, which historically drove up the price of soy. Without regulation, the corn market, in a particularly temperate season, could allocate more of its crop to biofuel production. Alternatively, in a season of severe heat, it could keep more of its crop for food supplies, thus satisfying demand for the US's dominant crop, and keeping prices down. But under the current federal scheme, the market does not have this flexibility.

Though the study found a surprisingly strong link between climate change and corn price volatility, the researchers noted a relatively small projected impact on overall food prices. They did, however, speculate that if US corn farmers could not increase their crops' heat tolerance by as much as 6 degrees Fahrenheit, much of the US corn belt would have to migrate north, toward the Canadian border, to escape the oppressive heat extremes.

Discussion of how rising temperatures will affect corn prices seems far removed from the national debate over climate policy, which is still focused on whether or not fossil fuels contribute to global warming (almost all climate scientists say that they do).?

Corn-based biofuels have received regulatory encouragement since the Energy Tax Act of 1978, a part of the larger National Energy Act that promoted the shift of US energy to renewable and more efficient sources. Congressional intentions aside, there has been increasing public discussion about the real value of biofuels, both environmentally and economically.

Robert F. Service, writing?in Science Magazine?in 2009, highlighted the underreported strain on water resources biofuels would impose. Whereas refining oil requires 10 to 40 liters of water to produce one megawatt hour, corn ethanol irrigation requires between two and eight million liters to produce the same supply. In essence, Service writes, "an increased reliance on biofuel trades an oil problem for a water problem."

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 4 Premiere Recap: High Tides, Low Blows

The Real Housewives of New Jersey are back and the feuding continues, but this time they're leaving their McMansions and taking it down to the Jersey shore.

Let's assess all the cussing, name calling, and backstabbing in THG +/- review!

It looks like no one has talked much since Teresa Guidice's infamous cookbook came out. Between the digs about her being as Italian as the Olive Garden and rehashing her son's brilliant idea for a strip car wash, Caroline Manzo is still pretty ticked off.

The Real Housewives of NJ

The two women end up meeting at a party at Jacqueline's and Caroline's doing an admirable job of freezing Teresa out but Teresa wants to talk. She says she wants to clear the air. Minus 10 because why wait for a family party to do that?

Why not just pick up the phone or go on over to Caroline's? I suppose the show wouldn't be fun if any of it made sense.

So Teresa apologizes…sort of.

"I think you misread it because if you really read it good you'd realize I didn't insult you." Really?  hat's your idea of an apology? Telling someone you didn't read it good? Minus 15 and I'm not even counting the grammar issues.

Teresa just keeps repeating that it was all a joke but Teresa's the only one who finds it funny.

And apparently this is not a good time to be messing with Caroline. She's going though menopause and isn't thrilled when her doctor tells her she's getting old. Plus 8 because even she admits she may go super bitch on someone who crosses her right now.

But it's the start of a long season and Caroline agrees to co-exist and move forward. Let's see how long that lasts.

Melissa Gorga seems to be serious about getting along with her crazy sister-in-law. She doesn't even want to hear about the cookbook anymore so Plus 7 for making the effort. But Kathy's husband Rich can't help but cause trouble and brings it up every chance he gets.

Of course even Melissa's resolve is tested when her hubby tells her that Teresa says Melissa would leave Joe in a heartbeat if a richer guy came along. When Joe asked her why she said it, Teresa's response is she heard it somewhere. Minus 11. The more Teresa talks the more I think she's nothing but stupid and mean.

The whole crew, minus the Manzo's travel down to the Jersey shore for the weekend and we get quite the inside view of the Guidice home as they prepare for their trip.

Teresa's yelling for Gia to help find her sister's iTouch and the little one is calling Gia a stupid whore. But Teresa did make her say she was sorry. Seriously?!?

The kid's about six years old and she's calling her sister a stupid whore! What's she going to be saying when she's 13? Minus 22. Sorry indeed.

On the car trip down, Joe tells Teresa that he didn't come home because he was hanging out with some girls the night before…but it was a business thing.

Yeah, even 11-year-old Gia isn't buying it. And that's the bigger problem. Gia's not a baby and she's not an idiot. I can only imagine what the kids at school say to her. They read the magazines and watch TV and there's so much stuff out there now.

So how does Teresa choose to handle it? By sticking her head in the sand the way she does everything else. Teresa and Joe decide the kids are too young to understand so why bother talking to them about it. Minus 15.

Umm, when your 11-year-old has to ask why the magazine cover says Daddy's cheating you've got big problems.

Joe's response to all this. He tells Gia to shut up and tells Teresa she knew this was the life when she signed on. Joe's a jackass who's never going to change. Minus 13.

And that gives me a new word to describe Teresa. To mean and stupid you can add sad. Very, very sad.

Next to the Guidices, the Gorgas appear almost normal and isn't that scary. Joe is teaching Gino how to use the potty like a big boy. As much as Joe Gorga makes my skin crawl on occasion, he seems like a good dad who adores his kids and his wife so Plus 12 for that.

But what was he thinking about that shore house? It's going to be perfectly nice once it's done but those kids can't stay there now with the construction equipment and the green pool. Minus 9.

Joe tries to tell Teresa that he'll be there for her if her husband goes to prison but somehow it ends up in a mess of misunderstandings. Minus 5. What else is new.

Back at Jacqueline's she's see a life coach to try and deal with the mess Ashley is making of her life and the ripple effect it's having on everyone else. Ash is now platinum blonde and getting tattoos and piercings.

The girl looks like a spoiled 15-year-old acting out not a 20-something starting her life and it's taking it's toll on Jacqueline and Chris' marriage.

So what's the solution? Chris has agreed to send Jacqueline away to relatives in Las Vegas? Plus 10. At least he didn't buy her another car. He's finally doing something but is this just pushing the problem off on somebody else? Maybe the change of scenery will help but will we really not see Ashley this season?

Somehow I'm sure the rest of the cast will give us so much drama that we won't even miss her.

LG Optimus 3D Max now available in Europe

LG Optimus 3D Max

Having announced the device during Mobile World Congress the folks from LG have slowly been rolling out the LG Optimus Max 3D and now it's time for it to land in Europe. The phone's arrival in Europe signals the global launch of the second-generation 3D device from LG and as noted by Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company:

“This device has evolved significantly since we introduced the first Optimus 3D at Mobile World Congress in 2011. Our second generation glasses-free 3D smartphone is as thin and light as any other high-end smartphone while still delivering a spectacular picture in either 2D or 3D.”

We took a hands-on look at the LG Optimus Max 3D shortly after it was announced and noticed quite a few software improvements that made the overall experience better then its predecessor. However, we came to the conclusion that if you didn't buy into the whole 3D thing before, you're not likely to with this device either. You can catch the full press release from LG past the break, though it does seem a little short on release info and pricing.
