Israel's Barak: Weigh 'unilateral action'

JERUSALEM (AP) ? There are signs the Israeli government is considering taking unilateral action if peace talks with the Palestinians remain stalled, a move which could involve a withdrawal from parts of the West Bank along the lines of a 2005 pullout from the Gaza Strip.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak told a high-profile security conference on Wednesday that inaction is not an option and Israel cannot wait forever to reach an accord.

"Israel cannot afford to tread water," Barak said. If a deal "proves to be impossible, we have to consider a provisional arrangement or even unilateral action."

The statement reflected a growing sense of urgency in Israel about ending its 45-year entanglement with the Palestinians, even if no peace deal is possible.

Two decades of on-again, off-again peace talks have failed to yield an agreement, and negotiations have been frozen for more than three years. And as time passed, a shift of thinking has quietly occurred in Israel: The occupation of Palestinian lands may ultimately be bad for Israel simply because ruling millions of Arabs will demographically sink the Jewish state.

The new twist: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has grown increasingly vocal about the need to separate from the Palestinians, now has a broad coalition freeing him of nationalists who claim biblical rights to the West Bank.

Netanyahu, who for years rejected most concessions to the Palestinians, has also raised concerns in recent months that continued control of the more than 2 million Palestinians in the West Bank would threaten Israel's character as a democracy with a Jewish majority.

Early this month, he shored up his coalition by bringing the main opposition party, Kadima, into the government. Netanyahu now presides over a coalition comprising 94 of parliament's 120 members, meaning he is no longer reliant on hard-liners to preserve his majority. The formation of this new supermajority has raised speculation that Netanyahu might soon come forward with a diplomatic initiative to end the deadlock.

Kadima's leader, Shaul Mofaz, has called for creating a temporary Palestinian state in roughly 60 percent of the West Bank until a final agreement can be reached. Such a proposal could easily align with Barak's suggestion of a unilateral withdrawal. Mofaz's office did not return messages seeking comment.

Palestinian officials quickly rejected the idea of unilateral Israel moves ? clearly concerned that after a partial pullout leaving them well short of their goals, Israel would have scant reason to negotiate further.

Barak did not elaborate on what sort of unilateral action he has in mind, but a spokesman said the defense minister has many "creative" ideas. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing internal discussions in the ministry.

It also remains unclear whether Netanyahu would support a unilateral action.

Netanyahu was a leading opponent to the 2005 Gaza pullout, resigning as finance minister at the time to protest what he believed was a surrender to violence.

The withdrawal, in which Israel uprooted all 8,500 Jewish settlers and thousands of soldiers, achieved its goal of enforcing a separation between Israel and the 1.5 million Palestinians of the tiny, impoverished strip. But most Israelis nonetheless see it as a failure: Shortly after the pullout, Hamas militants violently seized control of the territory from the more moderate Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas, turning it into a hotbed of fundamentalist Islam and a base for frequent rocket attacks on southern Israel.

Netanyahu has warned he will not allow the same thing to happen in the larger, more central highland of the West Bank, where rocket squads would have Israel's international airport and major cities in easy range. Nonetheless, Netanyahu's silence on Barak's comments appeared to put hard-liners in his government at unease.

Gideon Saar, a Cabinet minister from Netanyahu's Likud Party, said Barak's speech "means that lessons have not yet been learned from the total failure of the unilateral disengagement plan from Gaza." He insisted Barak represented a "fringe minority" and did not reflect government policy.

Despite Netanyahu's past opposition to the Gaza pullout, he has shown signs of moderating since he was elected prime minister three years ago. Shortly after taking office, Netanyahu came out in favor of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, reversing decades of opposition.

On Tuesday, speaking to the same security conference, Netanyahu reiterated his fears of the demographic threat posed by continued control over the Palestinians. Most demographers believe that the Arab population in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel proper could soon outnumber the Jewish population of some 6 million.

Netanyahu said it was essential "to prevent the creation of a binational state" encompassing Israel and the Palestinian territories. "We don't want to rule the Palestinians, and we don't want the Palestinians as citizens of Israel," he said.

Israeli-Palestinian peace talks broke down in late 2008 and have remained stalled, largely because of Palestinian objections to continuing Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

The Palestinians seek both areas, captured by Israel in 1967, in addition to Gaza for a future state and have refused to negotiate while Israel expands the settlements that already house some 500,000 Israelis on occupied territory.

Netanyahu opposes any Israeli withdrawal from east Jerusalem, which is home to sensitive religious sites, and says Israel must retain control over parts of the West Bank for security reasons. He also has resisted repeated calls from the international community to halt settlement construction.

With the Israeli and Palestinian positions seemingly unbridgeable, a unilateral pullout from parts of the West Bank could provide a way out of the impasse.

Barak's comments were reminiscent of the run-up to the Gaza pullout. In the weeks before then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced his plan, his deputy at the time, Ehud Olmert, floated the idea of a unilateral separation from the Palestinians.

Barak and Netanyahu are close today despite a tumultuous personal history. Barak was Netanyahu's commander when he led Israel's vaunted Sayeret Matkal commando unit in the 1970s; later, as ideological rivals, Barak bested Netanyahu in the 1999 election for prime minister; today, his popularity having waned, Barak depends on Netanyahu politically, yet also offers him an invaluable cloak of legitimacy as a pragmatic and experienced lieutenant.

With that in mind, many suspected Barak was floating a trial balloon on behalf of the prime minister.

Israel is likely to try to at least coordinate such a move with the Palestinians, to avoid a repeat of the Gaza scenario. It could try to persuade the Palestinians to accept an interim arrangement as a step to build trust and solidify Palestinian rule ahead of a final agreement. That would also get around the rift between the Palestinian authority in the West Bank and the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip ? a major obstacle to a final deal.

But the Palestinians seem unlikely to do much to play along: They oppose any talk of unilateral action or an interim agreement, saying that a temporary solution would likely become permanent.

And Netanyahu's vision of retaining not just east Jerusalem but major settlement blocs in the West Bank and a strip of land along the border with Jordan falls far short of Palestinian aspirations.

Palestinian official Saeb Erekat questioned Israel's sincerity.

"If they want to reach an agreement, they know they can, based on a two-state solution," he said Wednesday. "Unilateralism is the name of the game for this government, which is very unfortunate and complicates and undermines the prospect of peace."

Monsanto (MON) Raises its Full-Year Guidance on Robust Sales ...

Agricultural products giant Monsanto (MON: Charts, News, Offers) surprised analysts this week by boosting its full year guidance. The company recently completed its seed selling seasons for North and South America. Robust sales in these regions gave Monsanto the confidence to increase 2012 earnings expectations from a range between $3.65 and $3.70 to a range between $3.73 and $3.78. For the third quarter, Monsanto expects to earn an adjusted $1.69 to $1.74 per share, which includes a one-time tax adjustment. Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant expects the 25% growth in EPS to continue a positive feedback loop into 2013. Analysts expect Monsanto to earn as much as $4.11 per share in fiscal 2013. This reinforces the strong growth trend Monsanto has exhibited since fiscal 2011, when it posted 20% earnings growth. Analysts remain bullish on Monsanto, which has topped analysts? estimates over each of the past six quarters by an average of over 7 cents each time.

Daily Chart

Monsanto, a controversial company that has been criticized for its heavy lobbyist presence, proliferation of ?Franken-foods? and heavy handed tactics against local farmers, is based in St. Louis, Missouri. Since being founded in 2000, the company?s market cap has increased nearly sixfold. Monsanto?s business, which has a strong presence in the United States and internationally, is divided into two primary segments ? Seeds and Genomics and Agricultural Productivity. The former is the company?s arm which creates regular and genetically modified seeds, while the latter creates agricultural, industrial, ornamental and turf applications, as well as various types of herbicides.

In April, Monsanto reported earnings of $2.28 per share on revenue of $4.7 billion. This topped analysts? earnings estimates by 16 cents and revenue estimates by $140 million. Much of Monsanto?s strength was attributed to its chemistry portfolio, which includes its selective herbicide Roundup. Roundup is paired with Monsanto?s own genetically modified seeds, which are resistant to Roundup. This highlights Monsanto?s other core strength ? its seeds-and-traits business ? which many investors consider a long term play on a rising global population coupled with the decline of arable land. Monsanto?s lawn-and-garden business also posted strong numbers.

Monsanto?s corn business sales in Brazil exceeded expectations. Monsanto also performed well in the United States with strong corn and soybean sales. Looking forward, Grant expects 2012 acreage demand for its genetically modified Genuity reduced-refuge corn seeds to exceed its initial acreage expectations. Its soybean counterpart, Genuity Roundup Ready 2 Yield Soybeans, are expected to achieve the high end of its prior acreage estimates. Monsanto? core business in Eastern Europe also posted strong sales.

?This year has been important confirmation of the momentum in our business, as we?ve taken advantage of the strong global acres and agricultural environment and delivered on the key business drivers we set as priorities,? Grant stated. Grant also noted that Monsanto was aggressively expanding into Latin American markets, boosting its presence in other emerging markets, and ensuring that it retains growth in the United States.

RIM warns of loss for Q1, hires JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help with strategic review

RIM announced last quarter that it would no longer be providing its traditional financial guidance for upcoming quarters, but CEO Thorsten Heins has nonetheless seen fit to deliver a "business update" today that offers some indication of what's in store for the company. The headline is that it's unsurprisingly projecting an operating loss for the next quarter (Q1 of its 2013 fiscal year), although it's not saying exactly how much, noting only that the "on-going competitive environment is impacting our business in the form of lower volumes and highly competitive pricing dynamics in the marketplace." The company's also confirmed that it has hired JP Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to aid in its so-called strategic review, which it says includes "opportunities to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives." On the slightly brighter side of things, RIM was able to boast that it now has a worldwide subscriber base of 78 million, and that it now counts 80,000 BlackBerry apps and 15,000 PlayBook apps -- both significant increases from a year ago. It also further notes that BlackBerry 10 remains on track for the "latter part of calendar 2012." You can find the company's complete statement after the break.

By Sarah Thaman

Spring has arrived, and along with it comes prime Wedding Season! If you have a relative or friend getting married this summer (and you didn?t?get called to Bridesmaid Duty), you may be wondering what appropriate attire might be. How can you dress to impress while still embracing the summer style? While the rules vary, here are some great ideas for three common types of weddings: Formal, Semi-Formal, and Casual/Beach.

Formal

Cupid's Pulse, celebrity couples, wedding, summer, style, fashion

Formal, or black-tie, affairs typically call for full-length dresses. Channel your inner goddess with a color block maxi like the one above, paired with a headband and silver bangles. Mint green is a hot trend, and pairing this hue with an emerald jewel tone make it ideal for day or?night. Wear your hair down, or stun with a low, loose bun. This Rose Evening Bag?is a perfect complement, holding all of your night?s necessities.

Semi-Formal

Semi-formal weddings are often harder to decipher. It?s always better to be more dressed up than underdressed, so opt for a flirty cocktail dress like the one shown above. This chiffon beauty is perfect for day or night, with coral-colored accessories, including this adorable Jules Wristlet. Nails are another great accessory ? and they often go overlooked. Choose a pair of neutral peep toe heels and perfectly pedicured toes for an added pop of color.

Casual/Beach

If the event calls for casual attire, such as a beach wedding, choose a feminine sundress. This is a perfect opportunity to sport a trendy print such as florals. Dress it up with a pair of adorable wedges, or dress it down with a pair of flat sandals. A peachy cheek and this stunning Mini Quilted Chain Flower Bag?complete the look.

When choosing a color of dress, consider when the wedding will take place. If the event is during the day, opt for lighter colors. Remember that while you want to look your best, this is the bride?s day. Out of courtesy, stay away from ivory, or all-white dresses. If the event is taking place in the evening, consider darker, jewel tone frocks. Follow these tips and you can?t go wrong. Who knows, you may just end up meeting your future husband ? possibly a groomsman?

Author Bio: While I may not be a professional stylist, I pride myself on choosing fashion that looks polished and classic, and I?m always helping friends choose their date outfits. ?Although I?m a writer for?HandbagHeaven.com?by day, outside of work I take joy in being a matchmaker, a newlywed, and a momma to my precious puppy, Luna.

Google's Totally free Phone Proposal | Sharing Reviews & Advices

Google CEO Eric Schmidt made a remark talking at Stanford?s College of Enterprise a number of weeks in the past which has rattled teacups all across the communications industry. Schmidt commented that he could see a long term that integrated no cost mobile phones provided to customers who acknowledge watching specific marketing.

His observation was that mobile phones are adopting a lot more characteristics that convey them nearer to handheld computer standing. Their performance has expanded to text messaging, email and net access. Schmidt referenced investigation that predicted an increase in cell phone use to as substantially as eight to 10 hours every day for purposes of talking, texting and working with the Web. Having a device so thoroughly built-in into private daily existence, advertising gets to be a viable kind of income ? and hence, a source of subsidy for free phone distribution.

Having a nod to actuality, Schmidt noticed that mobile phones could by no means be entirely absolutely free. He noted that newspapers have had an economic model based on advertising for a century, but have in no way been totally free ? despite the fact that they are absolutely affordable. Really, some of the additional effective newspaper ventures remaining would be the cost-free community weeklies that land on your doorstep. However, tv empires had been built on marketing plus the networks have in no way been identified to subsidize Tv distribution.

Google is experimenting with providing text and video clip ads to mobile phones with Lcd screens. They?ve developed alliances with a few of Japan?s telephone networks, exactly where purchasing by way of the cellular phone screen has turn into an actuality. In accordance with Schmidt, having said that, Google has no present ideas to offer absent phones and he?s unaware of any work by phone producers, mobile phone support companies or World wide web telephone services to do so.

Even so it?s a mistake to ever acquire offhand remarks from Google executives lightly. Although the question of phone availability both at reduced expense or expense cost-free remains an open up one, the specter of marketing on mobile phones isn?t any for a longer period a query in any way. Cell phones will soon be capable of deliver the targeting information for advertising that laptop or computer clicks offer now. When advertisers are in a position to harness that information, the mobile phone advertising marketplace will turn into increasingly attractive.

An evaluation of Google?s acquisition of YouTube included the observation that with the fragmenting of broadcast television, there had been $67 billion in yearly advertising dollars out there inside the fingers of those who are uncertain exactly where to spot them. This specific analysis speculated around the chance of Google?s potential to information a few of people bucks to YouTube.

Google?s idea of using the cell phone being an advertising automobile need to be deemed within the same vein. It may well not be around the radar display at the moment, but that does not mean that an enterprise with all the revenue, the power plus the expertise of the Google can?t place a major blip on that display in brief purchase.

From Schmidt?s point of view, the industry goes to be there. Google?s $9.3 billion in 2005 income was derived from your sale of marketing and positioning on its search program. They realize the brand new advertising platforms far better than every other company entity within the business enterprise. Google has said that one day, cellular telephone advert income will match pc primarily based advert revenue.

Venus to have its final day in the sun for the 21st century

The planet Venus is due to pass in front of the sun on June 5th and 6th. It won't do so again until 2117.?

Scientists are gearing up for the upcoming transit of Venus, an extremely rare opportunity to watch the planet Venus pass in front of the sun as seen from Earth.

Venus is due to make this cosmic crossing June 5-6 ? the last time such an event will occur until 2117.

When viewed through special solar filters or protective equipment, the transit should offer skywatchers and amateur astronomers an unforgettable sight, weather permitting. But the event is also a rare?opportunity for scientists.

As?Venus transits the sun, sunlight will be filtered through the planet's atmosphere. By analyzing the absorption features in this light, researchers can learn more about the chemical elements present in the gaseous haze around Venus.

Many of the world's premier telescopes will be trained on the sight, including NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Solar Dynamics Observatory, as well as the European Space Agency's Venus Express satellite in orbit around Venus.

The Venus Express science team will be watching, and broadcasting live, from the Arctic island of Spitsbergen.

"We're very excited about?watching the transit from such a unique European location?while Venus Express is in orbit around the transiting planet," Venus Express project scientist H?kan Svedhem said in a statement. "During the transit, Venus Express will make important observations of Venus' atmosphere that will be compared with ground-based telescopes to help exoplanet hunters test their techniques."

Because of the peculiarities of the orbits of the planets around the sun, Venus transits are visible from Earth in pairs separated by eight years. The upcoming transit is the second in a pair that began with one in 2004, which at the time was the first visible in more than 121 years. [Venus Transit of 2004: 51 Amazing Photos]

The 2004 transit provided scientists with the first opportunity to view such an event with modern equipment and telescopes.

"Modern solar telescopes captured unprecedented view[s] of Venus?s atmosphere backlit by solar fire," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on the Science@NASA blog. "They saw Venus transiting the sun's ghostly corona, and gliding past magnetic filaments big enough to swallow the planet whole."

Canadian Oil & Gas Equities May Have Finally Bottomed Out

Canada is the largest foreign provider of oil and gas to the United States, and the two countries are generally friendly, making many Americans not even consider Canada a foreign energy source, or deem it an acceptable one. Still, many Canadian citizens, oil and gas equities, and the country itself, must not be feeling too pleased by the recent U.S. government's denial of the Keystone pipeline, which would have facilitated the distribution of dramatically increased levels of Canadian petroleum into the Unites States.

Additionally, natural gas prices within North America have fallen dramatically over the last two years, reaching historical lows within 2012. The apparent bottoming process for natural gas process may be over, as gas prices have increased by about 30 percent over the last month, but such is no certainty. Moreover, the capacity and trade problems highlighted by the Keystone roadblock have compelled many investors to exit positions in Canadian petroleum equities, and especially those with high exposure to natural gas.

Further, the Canadian dollar is primarily backed by the nation's natural resources, and has come under weakness versus the U.S. dollar over the last several quarters, after most commodities peaked and started to decline, including oil and gold. Recent European instability has further bolstered the U.S. dollar versus most commodities and the currencies that rely upon them.

Below is a recent performance table for six high yield Canadian oil & gas equities that trade within the United States (listed in alphabetical order): Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE), Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE), Enbridge Inc. (ENB), Enerplus Corporation (ERF), Pengrowth Energy Corporation (PGH) and Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (PWE). I have included their one-week, one-month and 2012-to-date equity performance rates, as well as their current yields.

For years now, natural gas prices have trended lower, as new technology has increased natural gas supplies far faster than demand for it has grown. Most Canadian oil and gas equities followed oil and gas price fluctuations, and haven't changed their dividend policies in several quarters. The recent low gas prices have caused some investors to question the sustainability of several of these lofty dividends, especially if oil follows gas lower.

In the last month, the above-listed equities averaged a decline of 13.61 percent, and the group now averages a decline of 20.7 percent since the start of the 2012. The declines were accelerating in early May, but the group appears to have stabilized over the last week or two.

Last week, the group actually averaged a 0.92 percent appreciation, with half of the equities appreciating and the other half all declining by less than 1 percent. This could indicate we are at a bottom for these equities, provided the commodities that they produce, oil and gas, can maintain their present price ranges.

Many may argue that dividend cuts have been priced into several of these equities, though others would assert that they should fall further upon such an announcement. Several have maintained their current dividend policy for the last two years, with half of the above-listed companies reporting and paying their dividend on a monthly basis. The higher dividend payers have certainly been the worst performers out of the group within 2012. Below is a three-month share performance comparison chart for the six above-mentioned Canadian petroleum producers:

Over time, it is expected that a growing amount of both oil and gas might find its way to western Canada for export to China, but such transfers take time, and pipeline build-outs are expensive and slow. It is possible that Canada could supply both China and the U.S., but issues of scale and capacity will have to be resolved.

Though outside the control of these companies, an additional Canadian pipeline to the U.S. could easily become a key issue of political debate during the second half of this election year. It is possible that the previously denied Keystone pipeline or another potion of it will get approved within the next two quarters, to prevent its absence from becoming a sore point for political targeting, and any such approval would broadly bode well for Canadian energy companies

New telescope to be in South Africa, Australia

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) -- Australia and South Africa will share hosting of a giant radio telescope made up of thousands of separate dishes and intended to help scientists figure out the make-up of the universe, the international consortium overseeing the project announced Friday.

South Africa led an African consortium that included Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia, and telescopes will be erected in all its partners. In South Africa, dishes will be added to a remote site in the arid Karoo desert where a smaller radio telescope project already is under way.

South Africa and Australia, which partnered with New Zealand in bidding for the project, had competed fiercely. South Africa claimed victory Friday, saying it got two of the projects three major components.

"We may feel slightly disappointed that we didn't get the whole thing. But I think one should emphasize that we did get most of it," said Justin Jonas, the chief South African scientist on the project. "Two-thirds of the biggest instrument in the world is still the biggest instrument in the world."

South Africa's science minister Naledi Pandor and scientists who had prepared the country's bid celebrated with an Africa-shaped cake at a news conference in South Africa's capital.

"This marks a real turning point in Africa, where we are becoming a destination for science and engineering, and not just a place where there are resources and tourism opportunities," Jonas added.

Australia also welcomed the split decision.

"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

Womersley said that splitting construction between the two nations will likely add around 10 percent to the (EURO)350 million ($439 million) cost of the first phase of building the giant telescope. But he said there would be a payoff for astronomers.

"It delivers more science in phase one. The capabilities of this instrument are greater than the original design," Womersley said.

Florida Highway Patrol to conduct sobriety checkpoint

The Florida Highway Patrol, Bradenton District, will conduct a Comprehensive Roadside Safety Checkpoint (DUI Checkpoint) on May 25, 2012. The checkpoint will begin at 9 p.m. at 1502 North Brevard Avenue in Arcadia, Florida. The checkpoint will conclude at 2 a.m. on May 26, 2012. FHP sets up such details to proactively remove impaired drivers from the roadways and ultimately enhance the safety of the motoring public. Troopers conducting the checkpoint will monitor those who pass through to ensure they are properly licensed and driving sober.

Driving impaired from alcohol or drugs put everyone on the roadways in danger. Florida law considers a driver with .08 or higher Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) to be impaired. Drivers under the age of 21 with a BAC of .02 or higher are also in violation of Florida law.

The Florida Highway Patrol would like to remind everyone that *FHP (*347) dialed from any cell phone contacts FHP should you need to report an aggressive driver or require roadside assistance.

If You Want Another Debt And Spending Binge, Vote GOP, Ctd

The AP now weighs in, ultimately relying on McCain economics adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin as a neutral arbiter. But it's another helpful run-through of the numbers. The first question, as I noted in my first post on the subject, is how to apportion the 2009 fiscal budget. The second is how to treat TARP. If you assign much of TARP and the 2009 budget to Bush, the subsequent rate of growth of spending does indeed look remarkably tight-fisted. Equally, assigning all of that to Obama, when he took office well into the fiscal year, alters things dramatically. Yes, he signed funding bills in 2009, but the cake was well-baked by then. But the AP assigns "much" of the spending in 2009, including the stabilizers, to Obama alone. They also refuse to give Obama any credit for the payback of TARP in 2010 or the decline in support for Freddie and Fannie.

The AP takes the hardest position on Obama and comes up with the following bottom line:

All told, government spending now appears to be growing at an annual rate of roughly 3 percent over the 2010-2013 period, rather than the 0.4 percent claimed by Obama and the MarketWatch analysis.

I think that's excessively tilted against the president. But even so, lets accept it for the sake of argument. A 3 percent annualized increase in federal spending would still put Obama in first place for spending restraint since LBJ - which is staggering given the scale of the economic collapse he inherited. A quick comparison? Bush's first term - with no global great recession - saw spending grow an annualized 7.3 percent. Reagan's first term? 8.7 percent.

And again, remember the Romney claim that started this all off: that "since President Obama assumed office three years ago, federal spending has accelerated at a pace without precedent in recent history."

Even when you put the maximal blame on Obama for spending in the last three years, including all the automatic spending that came with the collapse of 2008, that's still untrue. And it's odd that the GOP insists it isn't. Shouldn't they be claiming some credit for restraining spending from 2010 onwards?

Using The Internet to Advertise Your Business: Search Engine ...

What are search engines? I like to think of them as the librarians of the Internet. If your business is well positioned with search engines it means you are more likely to be found when people are surfing the Internet. Using search engines is essential to getting traffic flow to your website.

Related Posts:

Companies that host websites can give you statistics about where your traffic flow comes from and how many people come from each particular search engine. These facts and figures show the importance of the search engines in generating traffic flow. There was a time when submitting your domain name and website to the search engines was free. This is becoming a rarity and the norm will soon be that you will have to pay to submit. Just about every search engine will charge you to list your site. This will have a couple of spin-off effects.

Obviously it will be an added expense for businesses wanting an Internet presence but it will generally reduce the overall number of websites that come up whenever you do a search, meaning less competition. The smaller websites will opt out of paying for search engine initialisation, leaving a less cluttered database for consumers. Whether this is better or not depends what you are using the Internet for. If you use it for research you will probably be worse off; if you use it to sell products you will probably be better off.

There are different levels of advertising rates on search engines. The simple way to understand this is that the more you pay, the more people will be directed to your site. Also, the more you pay the higher up the search list your business name will appear when people plug in a keyword.

The Internet is a numbers game. If you sell one product for every thousand visitors to your site the aim is to increase the number of visitors so you sell more products. This may appear oversimplified but the Internet has become overcomplicated and it doesn?t need to be.

Emotional Freedom Technique: A Positive ... - Health and Fitness ...

I?m slowly changing for the better. I?m becoming a stronger, more focused, more self-assured and more grounded person ? much more so than I probably ever have been. All this is the result of using EFT (emotional freedom technique) on a consistent basis every day. When I first learnt the technique I?d use it only when I needed it, and I?d be amazed by the results.

As I began to tap on a more regular basis I started to see some very fundamental changes to some of the more profound behaviours that had been driving me all my life.

The more I tapped the more insights I developed about myself and my life, and the more I understood exactly what I needed to do to change for the better. The beauty of EFT for me is that it allows you to be completely and utterly honest with yourself about what you truly believe you are as a person.

Some of the more conventional schools of personal development thought advocate positive thinking at all times, so that good thoughts and consequent behaviours and habits become embedded in your psyche and body. This is absolutely fine. However, using positive thinking alone can be challenging if every fibre of your being is screaming ?I don?t believe a word of this!?

That scream represents a fundamental dilemma in your mind that can result from saying the affirmation (or positive phrase) out loud, but feeling in your body all the underlying negative emotions that conflict with that affirmation.

The underlying ?stuff? is said to represent your subconscious feelings and thoughts, which are said to be linked to your protection and survival mechanisms. They are therefore very strong, and often overpower any affirmation that comes from your conscious mind.

EFT allows you to start from where you are, and acknowledge your deepest thoughts, feelings and fears in a way that is safe and controlled. Whilst tapping and opening up to yourself you are revealing yourself to yourself. Although this can at times be traumatic (especially if it?s the first time you are really being honest with yourself), it is releasing you simultaneously from all the inhibitions that have kept you limited all your life.

The founder of EFT describes this process as cutting down trees in a forest. The tallest trees get chopped in half each time you perform EFT. This reveals other trees that, too, get chopped in half. Each tree represents an emotion, or issue that you are dealing with. Gradually, over time, all the trees get completely chopped down, and you are left feeling calm, centred, fearless and completely self-assured.

Like myself, EFT can be used to work on the trees in your own emotional ?forest? so that you may come to a place where you feel safe. This secure feeling can come from the knowledge that you have a tool designed to offer release from numerous emotional and physical issues. This can have a positive knock-on effect to your physical health and overall sense of wellbeing.

Wikileaks founder Assange has day in court

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange will find out next week if he will be extradited to Sweden to face sex crime allegations. Lawyers for Assange had asked the UK?s highest court to block the move, claiming the European arrest warrant issued against was ?invalid and unenforceable?. A panel of seven Supreme Court judges, who heard the case in February, will give their judgment next Wednesday. The Swedish authorities want Assange, 40, to answer accusations of raping one woman and sexually molesting and coercing another in Stockholm in August 2010, while on a visit to deliver a lecture there.

Assange, whose WikiLeaks website has published a mass of leaked diplomatic cables that embarrassed several governments and international businesses, says the sex was consensual and the allegations against him are politically motivated. In November 2011, the High Court upheld a ruling by District Judge Howard Riddle ? who sat at Belmarsh Magistrates? Court, South London, in February 2011? that the Australian computer expert should be extradited to face investigation.

If the Supreme Court rejects his appeal it will mark the end of his lengthy UK legal battle.

'Duets' Premiere: Robin Thicke Says 'I'm Just Going To Show Up And Sing'

With so many reality singing competitions on TV, ABC is hoping to raise the bar with its new series "Duets", a show that partners an amateur hopeful with a superstar singer on the live stage. But don't expect mentors Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Robin Thicke and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles to spin around in big red chairs. These celebrities are hitting the road to find the next voice.

The biggest draw for Thicke, however, who has only had one song succeed on the pop charts (2006's "Lost Without U"), is being introduced him to a whole new audience.

HuffPost TV chatted with the new reality singing judge about his new gig on "Duets", what her learned from his dad ("Mr. Smooth") and what "morning coffee on the veranda" (a reference he made as a mentor on "The Voice") really sounds like.

What made you want to join ABC's "Duets"?
My music is my life, and my art is my life. I just wanted an opportunity for more people to hear my music. I figured that if I do this show, there will be a bunch of people who have never heard of me before listening to my music. I don't play on pop radio a lot, so it will be nice to just get my music out there. That's my goal.

It's an interesting concept for a show because you're going to be singing every week with your contestants.
That's what I wanted -- the opportunity to perform and to sing and to not just be a judge.

So you wouldn't be happy just sitting in a big red chair?
No, absolutely not. I couldn't do that.

Do you think that's where "Duets" separates itself from the other reality singing competitions?
Yeah, that's what is fun about it. We get to sing every week, and I know that the four of us all love to do that. [Laughs.] So I think it will be fun for all of us.

What are you looking for in a duet partner?
Sometimes the more different you sound from one another, the better. I'm looking for someone who sings with passion and soul because then we'll get along just fine.

Are you prepared to send people home? That's always the toughest job for a judge, especially when there can be public backlash.
Oh, I don't know. I think I'm just going to find a way to let the audience make my decision for me. I'm not really one to pick and choose, so we'll see how that goes. I really don't know how it's going to go. I'm not going to pay that much attention to it. I'm just going to show up and sing. I'm going to pick some good songs and sing them. That's what I'm going to do.

Which songs are you hoping to cover?
We'll definitely need to do some Marvin Gaye, and Al Green and some Michael Jackson or Aretha Franklin. Stevie Wonder would be great. Bob Dylan!

Your dad, Alan Thicke, is a TV icon. Did he give you any advice or did you ask him for any tips?
He's pretty much always been giving me little tips here and there. He tells me to get my charm and my game together. He pretty much leads by example. He's Mr. Smooth and Mr. Cool. He's bulletproof, so I just learn by watching him.

I'm trying to imagine Jason Seaver as Mr. Smooth.
Well, he played the silly dad! But in real life, he's Mr. Cool. He's Clark Gable.

Coincidentally, you were on "The Voice" this past season, helping Adam Levine. Did you know about "Duets" when you were guest mentoring with Adam on "The Voice"?
I actually got the offer right after I was on "The Voice".

At least you had some practice.
Exactly. Being a producer and a writer for other people, mentoring comes naturally to me. You try to pull a performance out of people when you're a producer.

There was a moment on "The Voice" when you said Nicolle Galyon's voice was like "morning coffee on the veranda." Can you please explain what morning coffee on the veranda sounds like?
Apparently, it sounds like her! [Laughs.] She just had such a sweet, peaceful voice, and it sounded like that part of the day when you're just at peace for a little bit before the day gets crazy.

Just like that morning coffee.
On the veranda with grape fruit!

"Duets" premieres Thursday, May 24 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

(AP) ? In the most unpredictable of playoff series, Rajon Rondo was the one consistent playmaker for Boston.

Until Game 6.

Rondo had his quietest game of the second round and the Celtics paid with an ineffective shooting night that left them playing catch-up against rugged and determined Philadelphia. The Celtics could never take that clutch late lead and now find themselves trying to avoid a monumental upset.

Jrue Holiday scored 20 points, and Elton Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to an 82-75 victory over the Celtics on Wednesday night that tied the Eastern Conference semifinals.Neither team has played well enough to seize control of the series by winning consecutive games. But the Sixers were good enough to win Game 6, improving to 5-0 this postseason in games following a loss. Game 7 is Saturday in Boston.

"It's nice to have it at home, but we've got to get it still," coach Doc Rivers said.

Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Rondo could be playing their last game together Saturday night if they can't find a way to hang onto the ball and put away a Sixers team that won't quit.

Boston has learned three times already how difficult that can be.

The fun for the Sixers started when former 76ers All-Star Allen Iverson earned a roaring standing ovation when he presented the game ball.

It ended with the song, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," blasting through the arena.

"I want more," 76ers coach Doug Collins said. "We're going to get greedy. We want more."

The Celtics posted ugly numbers across the board: Blame the loss on the 33 percent shooting, the 17 turnovers or the 3 for 14 3-point shooting. Either way, there's enough to go around. Pierce had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Garnett had 20 points and 11 boards.

Rondo had tortured the Sixers over the first five games, but was limited to nine points (4 for 14 shooting) and six assists.

He'll need to return to form at home for the Celtics to have a chance at avoiding the upset.

"I thought he was trying to orchestrate the offense and trying to go," Rivers said. "He probably got caught in the middle. It happens, but he'll be better."

The Sixers again failed to put up the sparkling numbers in the box score usually required for a deep postseason run. They missed 8 of 9 3-pointers, shot a woeful 17 of 28 from the free throw line and had 12 turnovers.

But when the Sixers really needed that game-changing basket, there was Evan Turner twisting and fighting through defenders down the lane. When the Sixers needed a stop, there was Brand, ripping a rebound away from Boston, even with painful neck and shoulder injuries that keep him awake at night.

"When you get out there, you don't feel much," Brand said. "You've got the adrenaline flowing. You're banging and fighting. That's why Coach has confidence in me to play 34 minutes."

The Sixers wrote "Huddle Up and Fight" on their locker room chalkboard. They did just that and are now one win from reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2001.

Iverson was the MVP of that run.

Maybe a little of that ol' A.I. magic rubbed off in Game 6.

Unlike Game 5, when the Sixers collapsed in the third quarter and blew a lead, they suddenly found a groove in front of 20,403 fans.

The Sixers started hitting free throws, kept turnovers to a minimum (two), and fed the ball to a starting lineup that had been largely outproduced by a fantastic bench. Turner was fouled on a go-ahead layup but missed from the line. That made the Sixers 5 of 13 while the Celtics were 14 for 14.

Iguodala split two defenders and threw down a ferocious dunk over Pierce to draw the foul. He made his first free throw after missing his first four and the Sixers led by five.

Pierce led the parade to the line for the Boston. He made his first 11 attempts for a Celtics team that was 17 for 17 through three quarters. The Celtics made only 19 field goals through three.

"We've got to move the ball and continue to play the defense that we've been playing," Pierce said.

The Sixers also couldn't find their way from the 3-point line and missed their first six attempts until Iguodala nailed one for a 58-52 lead.

Garnett caught some heat after calling Philly fans "fair weather" after Game 5 in Boston.

Well, the forecast called for thunderous cheers after Iguodala buried his 3. That helped the Sixers take a 60-56 lead into the fourth and put them 12 minutes away from Game 7.

This time, the Sixers weren't blowing a lead.

Turner, who never met a clutch attempt he didn't like, went right-to-left on a drive down the lane for a nine-point lead. The 6-foot-4 Holiday brushed off the 4-inch difference and went high over Garnett for a one-handed bucket and an 11-point lead.

"Someone else was talking bad about our fans, so it was good to get this victory for them," Brand said.

While the Sixers swapped shot makers on almost every possession, the Celtics never found that third and fourth option behind Pierce and Garnett.

"We never really established Kevin," Rivers said. "Even though Kevin had points, it wasn't the type of points we needed."

Iguodala and Turner scored 12 points. Lou Williams had 11 and the Sixers outscored Boston 42-16 in the paint.

"I just want our guys to play with no fear," Collins said. Collins had the Sixers watch a highlight video from Game 7 of the 1982 Eastern Conference finals on Tuesday. The Sixers blew a 3-1 lead in that series and were forced to win Game 7 at Boston to reach the finals ? which they did.

Thirty years later, the Sixers get to try again.

Notes: Iverson cupped his hand to his ear and received the loudest ovation of the night. He watched the game from a suite and his eyes watered up when he was shown later in the game on the big screen as the crowd, thousands wearing a No. 3 jersey, went wild and chanted, "MVP!" Iverson posted on Twitter, "You can always come home again!!!" ... Celtics assistant coach Tyronn Lue was famously stepped over by Iverson in the 2001 NBA finals. ... Celtics G Avery Bradley (shoulder) sat out. Rivers said Bradley and Allen are both considered day to day. ... Collins was stunned Iguodala was left off the NBA's all-defensive squad. Collins said Iguodala should have been "no worse than a second-team defender." ... Mickael Pietrus hit the only 3 of the half for either team at the buzzer to send the Celtics into the break ahead 36-33.
