LONDON (Reuters) - London's 2012 Olympics opening ceremony raced into the British charts on Sunday with a collection of music from the kaleidoscopic extravaganza becoming the week's fifth-best selling compilation album after just 24 hours on sale.

Friday's 27 million pound ($42 million) "Isles of Wonder" spectacle, devised by filmmaker Danny Boyle and watched around the globe, was performed to a roller coaster of British music that ran from Mike Oldfield's blockbuster "Tubular Bells" to Dizzee Rascal's 2009 hit "Bonkers".

Elgar's "Nimrod" Enigma Variation shared the Olympic Stadium's stage with Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys and British electronic duo Underworld, who were music directors of the event.

All feature on the anthology, which had sold 10,000 copies by the sales cut-off time on Saturday, enough to make it fifth in the compilation album charts, which are separate from the main album rankings, the Official Charts Company said.

The week's best-selling album, "Ill Manors" from London singer Plan B, brought another Olympic connection to the charts as it topped the rankings on its debut.

The album is the soundtrack for a low budget crime film of the same title written and directed by Plan B - under the name Ben Drew - set in the run-down London area of Newham which includes the Olympic Stadium in its boundary.

Other new entrants in the album stakes were "Handwritten" at number two from U.S. rockers Gaslight Anthem, Jennifer Lopez's greatest hits collection "Dance Again" in fourth place and English singer Joss Stone's "The Soul Sessions Volume 2" at number six.

English rock band Florence and the Machine held on to the top spot in the singles charts with "Spectrum".

English singer Conor Maynard was a new entry at number four with "Vegas Girl", while U.S. duo Karmin were also new in sixth place with "Brokenhearted".

The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) has more than doubled the number of welfare recipients who got jobs and got off welfare ? 10,618 of them as of July 9th and climbing.? On June 12th, 18 days ahead of schedule, DSS achieved and continues to exceed by hundreds its ?Wildly Important Goal? in Economic Services.

The goal originally set by the new DSS Director Lillian Koller in September 2011 was to get 10,120 welfare recipients jobs and off welfare by June 30, 2012, compared to only 5,060 in 2010.? Cases counted toward the goal only if they were closed because the family had increased income.

A great diversity of employers stepped up to hire these DSS clients and create win-win-win outcomes for their businesses, these families, and their communities.

Jobs ranged from big companies like WalMart, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Western Hotels, Waffle House, K-Mart, Dollar General, and Dairy Queen to small businesses like Carolina Staffing, McCall Farms, Montrose Manor Assisted Living, The Tax Doctor, Little Scholars Academy, Breaker?s Convenience Store, Tire and Oil, and Amick Farms.

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell on Monday, reversing early gains, as mining and energy shares slid on concerns that expected stimulus measures from the United States and Europe may not be enough to shore up their fragile economies.

The Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank both meet this week, and market expectations have been high in recent days that they will act to stimulate economic growth and that the ECB will tackle the spreading euro zone debt crisis. ECB President Mario Draghi said last week the bank was ready to do whatever was necessary, within its mandate, to save the euro.

But after last week's optimism, some investors on Monday turned skeptical that ECB policymakers will deliver in line with market expectations when they meet on Thursday, pressuring the euro and checking gains in commodities.

"There's a lot of chatter, but not much about how he's (Draghi) going to do it and whether he's going to get the approval from other communities," said Sid Mokhtari, market technician and director, institutional equity research, CIBC World Markets.

Shares turned lower after a meeting between U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, on Monday failed to produce any concrete details about how the euro zone would tackle the debt crisis.

Most of Canada's 10 main sectors fell, led by the influential materials sector, which slid 0.3 percent. Top fertilizer producer Potash Corp was the biggest decliner, falling 2.1 percent to C$44.93. Agrium dropped 1.4 percent to C$95.98, and First Quantum Minerals was off 2.3 percent at C$18.18.

Ivanhoe Mines Ltd tumbled nearly 4 percent to C$8.44 after Rio Tinto Plc said on Monday it paid about $935 million for 133.6 million shares, or 51 percent of the stock the Canadian miner put up in a rights offering.

At 11:47 a.m. EDT (1647 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was down 23.05 points, or 0.2 percent, at 11,743.31. The index retreated after touching 11,803.78, its highest level since July 5.

Canadian energy shares fell 0.3 percent as U.S. oil prices slipped on signs of lower production from OPEC. Oil and gas losses were led by Suncor Energy , down 1.8 percent at C$31.32, Cenovus Energy , which fell 1.9 percent to C$30.96, and Cameco Corp , off 2.9 percent at C$21.44.

Canadian Oil Sands Ltd edged down 0.7 percent to C$20.86 after the pipeline company announced after the close on Friday that its second-quarter profit sank 71 percent due to major plant maintenance that reduced production, lower oil prices and higher operating costs.

Sentiment also soured after data on Monday showed Spain slid deeper into recession in the second quarter as tough austerity measures took effect both on overall demand and the price consumers have to pay for goods.

Canadian financial shares slid 0.2 percent. Toronto-Dominion Bank

led losses, falling 0.6 percent to C$78.97. Manulife Financial Corp sank 0.4 percent to C$10.76, as the market anticipated Canada's largest life insurer will likely post a loss for the second quarter when it reports later this week.

DENVER (AP) ? Firearms sales are surging in the wake of the Colorado movie theater massacre as buyers express fears that anti-gun politicians may use the shootings to seek new restrictions on owning weapons.

In Colorado, the site of Friday's shooting that killed 12 and injured dozens of others, gun sales jumped in the three days that followed. The state approved background checks for 2,887 people who wanted to purchase a firearm ? 25 percent more than the average Friday to Sunday period in 2012 and 43 percent more than the same interval the week prior.

Dick Rutan, owner of Gunners Den in suburban Arvada, Colo., said requests for concealed-weapon training certification "are off the hook." His four-hour course in gun safety, required for certification for a concealed-weapons permit in Colorado, has drawn double the interest since Friday.

"What they're saying is: They want to have a chance. They want to have the ability to protect themselves and their families if they are in a situation like what happened in the movie theater," Rutan said.

Day-to-day gun sales frequently fluctuate, but the numbers also look strong outside of Colorado, too.

Seattle's home county, King, saw nearly twice as many requests for concealed pistol licenses than the same timeframe a year ago. Florida recorded 2,386 background checks on Friday, up 14 percent from the week before. Oregon sales on Friday and Saturday were up 11 percent over the month prior. Four days of checks in California were up 10 percent month-to-month.

During the past decade, June and July have consistently been the slowest months for gun sales, according to FBI data.

Jay Wallace, who owns Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, Ga., found that his sales on Saturday were up 300 percent from the same day a year ago ? making it one of the best Saturdays his business has ever had. He said customers are often afraid when there's a gun-related tragedy that some lawmakers might try and push through an anti-gun agenda.

"We shouldn't let one sick individual make us forget and lose sight of freedoms in this country," Wallace said.

Authorities have said that the suspected Colorado shooter, James Holmes, methodically stockpiled weapons and explosives at work and home in recent months. He purchased thousands of rounds of ammunition and a shotgun, a semi-automatic rifle and two Glock pistols, authorities said.

On Friday, clad in head-to-toe combat gear, he burst into a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," tossed gas canisters into the crowd and opened fire. The shooting killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others.

Police in the Denver suburb of Aurora say Holmes also booby-trapped his apartment. Holmes is now in solitary confinement at a local jail.

The rise in gun sales reflects but one of the anxieties created by the shootings. Since the massacre, there have been reports of chaos at movie theaters, apparently sparked by misunderstandings or careless words.

A confrontation with an intoxicated man in an Arizona theater caused about 50 people to flee, authorities said. A southern California man was arrested after authorities say he made allusions to the Aurora massacre after the movie didn't start on time. In New Jersey, a showing of "Batman" was canceled after someone stood up during the movie, opened an emergency exit and then returned to their seat.

About 90 minutes into a Monday night showing of "Batman" in Santa Monica, Calif., shrieks from some girls sent about two dozen people sprinting for the exit. It turned out that a large man with a backpack was actually not a threat and was simply having a medical problem.

"This was nothing, and yet it startled us and rattled us so much," said moviegoer Paria Sadighi.

Nationally, the shootings have triggered a fierce debate over gun control and whether government has a role in reining in the ownership of firearms.

Gun sales often fluctuate based on news events, especially whenever people think the passage of more restrictive gun laws is imminent. Sales spiked following the election of President Barack Obama, when weapons enthusiasts expressed fear that the Democrat might curtail gun rights. FBI figures also show background checks for handgun sales jumped in Arizona following the shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in 2011.

"It's not uncommon for us to see spikes in requests for concealed pistol licenses when there's a significant gun-related tragedy," said Sgt. Cindi West of the King County sheriff's office in Washington state.

Some Democratic lawmakers in Congress cited the shooting as evidence of the need for tougher gun control laws ? particularly a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines. Congress, however, hasn't passed strict legislation in more than a decade, and leaders in Washington show no sign of bringing up such measures any time soon.

Production on Fox's sci-fi drama "Fringe" has been shut down for two weeks due to the illness of star John Noble.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells The Hollywood Reporter that the 63-year-old Noble, who plays scientist Walter Bishop on the show, is being treated for a sleep disorder. Noble's illness effectively shut down filming on the fifth and final season on Tuesday -- just one day after he was expected to appear on the Television Critics Assn. press tour panel with Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, Lance Reddick and showrunner J.H. Wyman.

The delay was initially said to be only three days, but sources now say it will be extended to nine shooting days, until about Aug. 7.

Noble's absence was addressed during the Fringe session at the Television Critics Association gathering on Monday, with Wyman telling reporters that the actor was "under the weather."

Filming on the season five premiere began last Wednesday in Vancouver and continued Thursday and Friday. Production on the series was paused Monday so cast members could attend TCA.

Separately, on Tuesday a source confirmed to THR that production had been impacted by co-star Jasika Nicole's car accident, in addition to multiple illnesses in the cast.

The extended delay is not expected to impact the series' Sept. 28 premiere date.

The news comes after castmates and Wyman publicly lauded Noble, who appeared at Comic-Con on July 15, for his work on "Fringe" and discussed his Emmy snub for his complicated performance on the sci-fi series.

If you?re anything like most people, you?re not a big fan of exercising. I can?t say I blame you. People love to talk about how great it feels to work out first thing in the morning or how they get addicted to the endorphin high ? blah blah blah. If you?re doing it right, working out isn?t fun. It?s uncomfortable and tiresome and there are plenty of other things that I would much rather be doing. Personally, I?d rather sleep late or catch up on all the mindless televisions shows saved on my DVR than sweat it out in the gym; that being said, I also want to look good in hot pants so you can see my dilemma.

Rest assured: staying up to date on all your prime time TV and looking good don?t have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, exercising doesn?t have to be as uncomfortable or as time consuming as you might think. Here are a few examples of exercises that will save time and sanity.

Sprint Intervals
I know. I hate running too. But what if it only took 4 minutes? AND you were standing still for 1 minute and 20 seconds of that 4 minutes? Oh and by the way, you?re getting a good workout?

What you?ll need: A treadmill

What you?ll do:

Sprint for 20 seconds at a?9-10ish Rate of Perceived Exertion (I?ll explain RPE below)
Rest for 10 seconds
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for 8 rounds or 4 minutes

The speed at which?you need to sprint is based on Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE). RPE is completely subjective and based entirely upon how you FEEL on a scale of 1-10. A 1-2 is something minor. For most people* moseying down the street is a 1 or a 2. RPE of 9-10 is your maximum effort which can (and should) only be sustained for a very short period of time. RPE of 9-10 depends entirely on your fitness level. My suggestion is you start the treadmill at a walking pace 2.5-3 mph and begin increasing the speed at 0.5 mph increments every 30 seconds. Determining the speed that corresponds to your RPE will take some trial and error at first but you should be sprinting fast enough that by the end of 20 seconds, you?re almost out of breath and really feel like, ?Oh crap, I need to stop.?

How long it will take: 4 minutes total. No that?s not a typo. It only takes 4 minutes but trust me, this will probably be the worst 4 minutes you experience all day. BUT it?s only 4 minutes. It?s less time than it takes you to shower, put on make up, drive to work, cook dinner, or finish a bag of Doritos. Heck, even most commercial breaks last longer!

Why it works: High intensity interval training has been shown to improve your aerobic and anaerobic systems. Umm what? I?ll save the scientific explanation for another time. All you need to know is that aerobic exercise has many health benefits which include helping you lose weight, improving your immune system, and boosting your mood. You mean those crackpots were on to something that ?endorphin high?? Yup. Anaerobic exercise helps burn fat and boost your metabolism, meaning your body will burn more calories even while you?re doing nothing. Lazy Girl, WIN!

Burpees
Excuse you? ?Burpees? are named after American physiologist Royal H. Burpee. They?re also called ?Squat Thrusts.? You can look it up on YouTube if you want to see someone actually do it before attempting is on your own.

What you?ll need: Nothing. Yup, that?s right. You just need you and a 5?10 foot space.

What you?ll do:

Start in a standing position. Arms comfortably by your sides. Feet should be about hip distance apart.
Squat down and put your palms on the floor in front of you.
Kick or step your legs back so you are in push-up or plank position. Don?t move your hands.
Jump or step back to a squatting position. Your hands should still be where you put them in step 1.
Jump up as high as you can and reach your hands over your head, like you?re trying to touch the ceiling
Repeat

There are many variations but this is the most basic version and therefore the best place to start.

How long it will take: How many do you think you can do in 5 minutes? Ok now try it and get back to me ? See if you can work your way up to a total of 50 repetitions.

Why it works: Burpees are the ultimate total body workout. It?s no wonder they?re used by Olympic athletes and the United States military to improve strength and endurance. You utilize your your chest, arms, back, abs, and thighs ? there aren?t many muscle groups left after that.

Yoga
What you?ll need: An exercise mat, maybe some towels. I prefer to take an actual class at a yoga studio rather than follow a video. Something about the comfort of my own home is not conducive to exercise and about 15 minutes after I turn the video on, I get bored and end up rummaging through the refrigerator or convincing myself that I?ll just watch the first 5 minutes of this week?s episode of ?Whitney? ? yeah right.

What you?ll do: Follow the instructor (live or on video) through a series of poses that will challenge both your strength and balance. There may even be some kind of guided meditation at the end of it.

How long it will take: Depending on the class or video, anywhere from 30-90 minutes. I usually can?t last longer than an hour.

Why it works: The funny thing about yoga is that most people don?t think of it as a strenuous workout. You roll into class in comfy clothes, breathe deeply, relax, stretch, sweat a little maybe, but at the end of it you feel refreshed. When was the last time you left the gym feeling ?refreshed?? Exactly. Practicing yoga is almost like tricking yourself into working out, which is the key to success for any Lazy Girl. In addition to being a total body workout that?utilizes muscle groups you don?t use on a regular basis, yoga has many health benefits like improved strength, flexibility, balance, and lung function. It can also help improve your posture and standing up straight actually makes you look about 10 pounds lighter. Talk about looking good with minimal effort ? stomach in, shoulders back, chin up. Easy as pie. Mmm pie.
