In A Revolutionary Approach, Fortress Fone? Secures the Platform ...

FortressfoneLOGOOn April 4th Fortress Fone? will be introduced in Washington DC. ?In many ways the phone represents a major technology shift ?a mobile phone that can communicate securely and cannot be easily hacked.

Today there are more than 100 products, some of them good and others not so, that offer a way to secure voice communications over the mobile network.? Most of them use encryption to secure a voice channel.? In a limited way, they succeed.? If you intercept the actual voice channel, you won?t be able to interpret the intercept.

But professionals know there are plenty of ways to get around the problem and still listen in to voice calls, steal data, or both.

The major problem is not with the encryption.

While there still are large government organizations with supercomputers that can commit a lot of resources and try to crack the encryption, it is a lot of work and not really the problem.

Mobile smartphones are vulnerable because of what they are and how they work.? If you put an encryption application ?on top? of the smartphone, it does not eliminate all the gaps underneath the encryption layer. ?In fact, they stay just the same.

Today there are hundreds of products sold commercially, and many others?that are?specially developed, that are used for spying on smartphones. ?android

Most of them use encryption to secure a voice channel.? In a limited way, they succeed.? If you intercept the actual voice channel, you won?t be able to interpret the intercept.

These programs, usually called ??Spyphones,? mean that someone else, or some organization, has control of your mobile phone, whether it is an Android, Apple, Symbian, Blackberry, or Windows platform. ?Some of them will record information and broadcast it later; others can stream out the information in real time. ?Many of these products control the microphones, cameras, data channels, email clients of the smartphone, and can access your cloud storage, servers and company or government networks.

Trying to encrypt your messages and voice on top of a Smobile_spy_productshotpyphone is a little like Hans Brinker trying to keep the water from running out of the dike by stopping it with his finger. ?For Hans it worked; for you, it won?t.

Smartphones were designed for popular commercial use.? Security was truly not a big issue for the engineers and programmers who built these terrific, but vulnerable, devices.

That is why Fortress Fone is such an important development. ?Fortress Fone was developed in Italy by a talented team of cryptologists and programmers who spend the bulk of their time supporting the needs of the Italian government and Italy?s military and defense establishment. ?With over 40 years of experience, the Italian group has proven itself good enough to supply important security products to NATO, and to government and police organizations in Europe and abroad.

Sometimes in the United States there is a disease called NIH, meaning Not Invented Here. NIH is a sort of disease that pervades government and industry, to a degree. ?In the world of globalized electronics and open systems, NIH can become an expensive problem rather than a solution. ?Fortress Fone is a case where a great deal has been achieved by a very smart team finding a new way to solve a vexing problem.

Thanks to their work, Italian government organizations, embassies and missions around the world, including peace keeping missions in the Middle East, will be able to communicate safely and securely. ?The Italian Army, which also operates in Afghanistan, will have a relatively inexpensive, flexible and low cost tool for communications and data.

The secret of the Fortress Fone is that the operating system has been specially hardened. While the phone, a Samsung Galaxy, works almost like any other Samsung Galaxy, it resists APPS and malware that try to tamper with it to gain access to the phone?s systems and sensors. ?How this is done is the magic, the secret sauce, of the Fortress Fone. ?It turns the Galaxy into a strong and secure system unlike any other.

While the magic part, the secret sauce, is not going to be made public, the system will be available for testing and vetting.?

The Fortress Fone? is a project of Ziklag Systems and Telsy SpA in Italy. If you want to attend the April 4th Government and Industry Day for Fortress Fone, please contact Rebecca Abrahams at abrahams@ziklagsystems.com
