House wants Google privacy answers
LOS ANGELES?? Lawmakers on the House Energy and Commerce Committee asked Google Inc. on Thursday to provide answers about recent changes to the search engine's privacy policy.
In a letter to Google Chief Executive Larry Page, the lawmakers said the company's announcement "raises questions about whether consumers can opt-out of the new data sharing system either globally or on a product-by-product basis."

The American Museum of Natural History hosts Beyond Planet Earth Tweetup with Scientific American

I knew it was going to be a wonderful night when I magically found street parking on Central Park West directly across from the American Museum of Natural History. Camera in hand I entered the planetarium where I enjoyed a presentation of vintage films and movies depicting space travel and life on other planets.
I was soon flying towards the ?dark side of the moon? and out into the Milky Way during a 3D presentation of the planets that was out of this world. I then eagerly entered the reception at The Hall of Reptiles and Amphibians where finally the opportunity to shoot presented itself and I took full advantage of capturing the guests, listening to speakers and meeting the editors and bloggers at Scientific American magazine in this magnificent setting.
The Beyond Planet Earth exhibit itself was also an excellent and fun place to shoot and I highly recommend checking out the exhibit yourself in person as there are many interactive apps and ways to explore! I have never had an opportunity like this before and I found the museum, discussions and science exhilarating! Perhaps, if there?s a next time, I can roller skate around the deserted museum taking photos and really bring ?a night at the museum? to life!

Man convicted of slaying girl kills himself, paper says (Reuters)
(Reuters) ? A Georgia man convicted of murdering a 7-year-old girl committed suicide on Thursday in prison, after he pleaded guilty in her slaying and was given a life sentence earlier this week, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Ryan Brunn, 20, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Georgia, state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kristen Stancil told the newspaper.
Stancil did not say how Brunn might have taken his own life.
Brunn has admitted to killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera in Canton, Georgia, in December.
He pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of murder, child molestation, enticing a child for indecent purposes, false imprisonment, abandonment of a dead body, making a false statement, sexual exploitation of children and two counts each of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and cruelty to children, the Journal-Constitution reported.
Reuters could not independently confirm the report. A representative from the Georgia Department of Corrections could not be reached for comment late on Thursday.

Google results fall short, rare miss hurts shares (Reuters)
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Google Inc's quarterly results fell short of Wall Street's heightened expectations for the holiday season as declining search advertising rates contributed to a rare miss, triggering a 9 percent slide in its shares.
The No. 1 Internet search engine underperformed on both revenue and earnings in the fourth quarter, disappointing investors who had counted on record U.S. online-commerce to prop up results.
Its shares dived to about $583 in after-hours trade, from the Nasdaq close of $639.57 before the results. Several analysts zeroed in on an 8 percent drop in cost-per-click, or money paid by advertisers to the company, versus analyst estimates of a slight increase.
"Expectations had got ahead of themselves for Google, largely because investors don't have a good feel for what happens outside the U.S.," said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan. "North America has remained strong, but there are parts of the world where there's a lot of economic pressure.
"I would have to assume Europe -- particularly Germany and some others undergoing austerity measures -- the underlying demand in those countries is weak."
Google's net revenue, which excludes fees shared with partner websites, was $8.13 billion in the fourth quarter, versus $6.37 billion a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S were looking for $8.4 billion.
That shortfall marks an unusual slip-up for a company that has exceeded Wall Street's revenue targets for eight consecutive quarters.
The number of clicks on Google's search ads increased sharply during the last three months of the year, but the cost per clicks -- the money that Google charges advertisers for the ads -- decreased 8 percent from the third quarter and 8 percent from the year ago period.
Executives on a conference call blamed foreign currency effects and changes in ad quality formats.
EXPENSES SWELL AGAIN
Operating expenses increased to 32 percent of revenue during the fourth quarter, from 30 percent of revenue in the year-ago quarter.
Google said on Thursday it earned $2.71 billion, or $8.22 per share, in the fourth quarter, compared with $2.54 billion, or $7.81 per share, a year earlier.
Excluding certain items, Google earned $9.50 per share, lagging estimates for $10.49 a share.
Some analysts questioned whether Google was investing heavily on projects -- such as its Android mobile software or Chrome Internet browser -- at the expense of the bottom line.
Another new initiative -- the fledgling Google+ -- appeared to be gaining momentum. Executives said three-fifths of the service's estimated 90 million users "engage" with it daily, and four-fifths do so weekly. User engagement or time spent on the social network, which Google hopes can eventually take on Facebook, is key to determining future revenue potential.
"Google+ investments are showing some results. They are investing in future revenue growth," said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.
For now, Wall Street wants answers on Google's mobile strategy as it dives into a fiercely competitive smartphone market through its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola.
Investors have been uneasy about Google's plans to buy Motorola, a deal the companies expect to close early this year. Chief Executive Larry Page has never fully detailed his long-term strategy for the asset other than saying it will be run as a separate company. Analysts say the company fears alienating Samsung Electronics and other Motorola rivals that helped Android become the world's foremost mobile-software system.
Executives said more than 250 million devices powered by Android had been activated since its inception.
"Google got hit with the ugly stick," said Fort Pitt Capital analyst Kim Forrest. "You've got to ask yourself, 'Where is the money going? What are they spending it on?' I have a feeling it is on platforms like Chrome and Android, and things like that."

Mirror editor says hacking could have gone on (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? Showbusiness reporters at Britain's Daily Mirror could have secretly engaged in phone-hacking in the past, the tabloid's editor and former showbiz editor Richard Wallace told a government-appointed inquiry on Monday.
Wallace, who took over in 2004 as editor of the Mirror, the main rival to Rupert Murdoch's Sun, told the Leveson Inquiry into press standards he was not aware of phone-hacking on the showbiz desk but did not always know the source of stories.
Asked whether phone-hacking could have been going on and hidden from him while he was showbiz editor of the Trinity Mirror-owned title from 1999-2000, Wallace replied: "It might well have been."
On the specific question of whether a 2002 story about an affair between then-England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson could have come from phone-hacking, he answered: "It's possible, yes."
Wallace was head of news at the time.
The Leveson Inquiry was ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron last year at the height of a phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World that prompted Murdoch to shut down the formerly best-selling Sunday tabloid.
The focus of public outrage was at first limited to the Murdoch press but concerns have grown about other titles as the inquiry has heard details from celebrities and journalists of unsavory newsgathering practices elsewhere.
James Hipwell, who was a financial columnist for the Daily Mirror at the time, told the inquiry in December that phone-hacking had seemed to be "perfectly acceptable" to some of the senior editors.
Wallace took over as editor of the Daily Mirror after Piers Morgan, now host of a chat show in the United States, was dismissed for publishing hoax pictures that purported to show Iraqi prisoners being abused by British soldiers.
Morgan has denied phone-hacking but boasted in 2006 of having listened to a voicemail left by Beatle Paul McCartney for his future wife, Heather Mills.
Wallace said he had not heard the message nor had he heard any talk of it at the time.
Trinity Mirror has carried out a review of its editorial controls and procedures and obtained written confirmation from its senior editorial executives that they had not engaged in phone-hacking or bribery.

Britain, HK to develop London as yuan trading hub (AP)
HONG KONG ? British and Hong Kong leaders said Monday they will team up to develop London into an international trading center for China's currency.
British Treasury chief George Osborne said in Hong Kong that his trip to Asia this week, which also includes stops in Beijing and Tokyo, furthers dialogue with Chinese authorities and Chinese and British banks "on establishing London as a new hub for the renminbi market as a complement to Hong Kong."
Hong Kong's leader, Chief Executive Donald Tsang said a new private sector-led group will be set up to look at strengthening ties between Hong Kong and London in terms of settlement systems, market liquidity and the development of renminbi financial products.
Beijing is promoting the international use of the renminbi, also known as the yuan. It's also promoting Hong Kong, a semiautonomous Chinese territory with its own financial system and currency, as an offshore trading center for the yuan.
Last year, yuan-denominated bank deposits in Hong Kong doubled to 630 billion renminbi ($100 billion) as savers sought higher returns from the yuan, which has been strengthening 4-5 percent a year.
Beijing would like to see the currency become an alternative to the dollar, although tight capital controls limit its circulation overseas.
"It's clear that there's scope for substantial expansion of the renminbi market in coming years," said Osborne, who was speaking at a financial conference.
He said that in June 2011, China's share of world trade was 11 percent but the yuan's share of global foreign exchange trading last year was only 0.9 percent.

South Carolina Presidential Primary Voter Guide (ContributorNetwork)
South Carolina's GOP presidential primary is scheduled for Jan. 21. Voters will decide the state's choice for the Republican nominee for president to face incumbent Barack Obama in November.
Here's a voter guide for people heading to the polls.
Before You Vote
The voter registration deadline was Dec. 21 to vote in the presidential primary. If you are voting absentee, your ballot must mailed by Tuesday. If you are voting absentee in-person, you must cast your vote by 5 p.m. on Jan. 20.
In order to vote on election day, you must bring one of three items with you. A voter registration card, a driver's license or a state-issued ID card have to be presented to the election officials at your polling place.
You can locate your polling place by looking at your voter ID card or checking online by inputting your voter information. The South Carolina Election Commission has a database that will tell your voting location.
Anyone can vote in the presidential preference primary, regardless of party affiliation. South Carolina does not record registrations by party. The Democratic Party will not be holding a primary this year.
At the Polls
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Anyone standing in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to vote. There are nine candidates on the ballot, including Rep. Michele Bachmann and Herman Cain even though they have dropped out of the nomination process. Candidates are listed in alphabetical order by their last name.
South Carolina uses a Direct Recording Electronic system to count votes. Third party Independent Testing Authorities ensure the DRE systems are safe and impervious to alteration. Voters mark on the screen what choice they want for president. Votes are tallied on the hardware within the voting machine that is used to verified results.
Results
NPR states every winner of a contested Republican South Carolina primary has gone on to win the party's nomination for president. The first presidential primary in the state was held in 1980 when Ronald Reagan won the primary. The New York Times posted results of the 2008 primary that had Sen. John McCain win with just 33.2 percent of the vote, the closest result in the primary's 32-year history.
Should there be less than a one percent margin between first and second place, a mandatory recount goes into effect.

The Los Angeles branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts held its 18th annual Awards Season Tea Party Saturday, where a slew of Golden Globe nominees sipped Earl Grey and nibbled on finger sandwiches and scones with jam and cream.
Michelle Williams, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep and Charlize Theron ? all up for best actress Sunday ? mingled with fellow filmmakers and nominees at the afternoon affair at the Four Seasons Hotel, also home to a gift suite and beauty lounge leading up to the Golden Globes.
The place was alight with stars. While the BAFTA tea party was going on in the hotel ballroom, Gilles Marini and Anne Heche collected swag at the HBO Luxury Lounge upstairs and Malin Ackerman and her stepmom got dolled up at the InStyle Beauty Lounge on a private outdoor patio.
Theron was already picture perfect when she arrived at the BAFTA party ? so perfect, in fact, that supporting actress nominee Octavia Spencer was afraid to get too close.
"I don't want to mess up your face," Spencer said as she embraced Theron on the red carpet.
"Mess me up, honey. Mess me up," the "Young Adult" star said as she gave Spencer a squeeze.
Spencer, a working actress for 15 years before her breakout role in "The Help," said the response to the film and ensuing awards journey has been "surreal."
"Steven Spielberg had a conversation with me and when he walked away from the table, I started crying, because it's (meeting) people who've inspired me," she said. "The fact that I am, for these next couple weeks, getting to rub elbows with them ? This coach is going to turn into a pumpkin in the next couple weeks, so I am living it up."
Spencer sat with her co-stars inside as BAFTA/LA chairman Neil Stiles implored guests to raise their glasses and wish "the best of British luck" to the various nominees. Also toasting were "The Artist" stars Berenice Bejo and Jean Dujardin, "Hugo" stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz, "Ides of March" star Evan Rachel Wood and Emily Watson of "War Horse."
Supporting actor contender Kenneth Branagh (for "My Week With Marilyn") said the BAFTA tea is part of the road to the Golden Globes.
"You enjoy every little bit of the journey that marks the way," he said. "There's a little ritual getting ready for tomorrow night.
"The day is one long preparation, so by the time you get inside that room, you can't help but be swept up with the adrenaline ? not only for the involvement with your own movie if you're lucky enough to be nominated, but just everyone else. You see amazing people across a crowded room, and the sense of celebrating the good things the movie business does is what it's all about."
The 69th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented Sunday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and broadcast live on NBC.

The Twitterverse is filled with all sorts of interesting people.? And since the microblogging service has launched, several firsthand military accounts that were recorded in past wars have gone online, usually posted by a family member or a staff?worker at a museum or historical society.?
The latest wartime diary to be tweeted is that of Private Ross Taylor, a 21-year old driver who served in the Royal Army Service Corps.?
According to The Telegraph, Private Taylor kept a detailed diary throughout 1940 as he was captured at Albert during the Battle for France and held at Stalag VIIIB in Poland.
Now his grandson, Chris Ayres, is planning to tweet his grandfather?s diary entries using the Twitter handle @driverross.
What makes?each diary entry?such a good fit for Twitter, is that each?entry was no more than 140 characters when they were first written, the maximum length Twitter allows for each message.
"The space for each day's entry was a small rectangle, covering perhaps a square inch of paper in total. My grandfather had filled each one in pencil and in, some cases, pen, never using nmore than the allotted space," Mr Ayres, a former Hollywood correspondent, writes in tomorrow's Sunday Times Magazine.
Chris Ayres has told The Telegraph he will begin tweeting tomorrow on New Year?s Day.

Craigslist, the popular website that features free online classified advertisements, can't seem to go a day without appearing in the news for some type of crime where either the buyer or the seller becomes a victim.
Here's one story that is definitely making headlines and involves a robbery.
Karl Trenker, a Marine veteran who did a tour in Afghanistan and Iraq, met up with a potential buyer of a necklace.
Two men showed up.? One of the men ended up grabbing the necklace and both took off running. When Trenker chased the men he was shot several times.
This is where the story gets interesting.?
To control the bleeding, Trenker plugged the bullet holes himself.
"I put my finger in the bullet holes, the big ones, and then I ran back to the car and I made sure the kids were OK and I told them, 'Listen, Dad's been shot. There's an ambulance already on the way," Trenker told a reporter.
The story is going viral across the internet and is one of the most popular stories on the Yahoo! News home page.
Trenker is expected to recover from his wounds.

Military Rape Fact goes viral on Twitter

OMG Facts, a site that says it features "interesting facts" as voted by its audience, posted a military-related statistic yesterday that was tweeted to its 3,000,000+ followers on Twitter.
As you can see by the picture above, the fact had to do with rape in the military.
"A woman in the US military is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than be killed in action!"
The message was retweeted by more than 100 Twitter users and sparked a lively discussion on the OMG Facts website with comments ranging from:
"This is horrible, but it should also be mentioned that since women serve in non-combat roles, they are very unlikely to see combat much less be killed in it."
to
"I'd just brush up on your self-defense and ball-kicking skills and hopefully you'll be fine ;P"
I'm not sure how rape in the military statistically compares to the rest of the US, but the fact is, rape is a despicable crime.

The Dubai School of Government has released the third edition of the Arab Social Media Report.?Here's what you can expect in the latest report.
The Arab region has recently experienced exponential growth in the use of social media.? Previous issues of the Arab Social Media Report have explored this growth, which has been fueled in part by the use of networks such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter in the movements of the so-called ?Arab spring.? The third edition of the report builds on these timely themes, which specifically explored the exponential growth of social media use in the Arab world, and the role of social networking tools in the civil movements in the Arab region.
Given the heightened participation of Arab women in these movements over the past months, despite their diminished use of social media as compared to the world average, this issue of the report will address three main questions:
1. Explaining the ?Virtual? Gender Gap: What are the factors contributing to the low level of social media use among Arab women, as compared to men?s usage and to the global female average??
2. Trends in Social Media Usage: Do Arab women perceive social media as useful to their needs? What are the usage trends?
3. Social Media as a Tool for Women?s Empowerment: Can social media potentially increase women?s civic participation in the Arab world and contribute to their political and economic empowerment?

Military Wives soloist Samantha Stevenson, whose husband is a Lance Corporal of the 24 Commando Regiment, Royal Engineers, has been the victim of cruel internet taunts over her tattoos, reports Mail Online.?
I'm not sure what the point is of the abuse, other than stupidity on the part of internet trolls who have nothing better to do with their time.
Here?s what Alanah Eriksen of Mail Online has to say:
"A mother who led the Military Wives choir to the top Christmas spot says she has been abused online because of her tattoos.
Yesterday's victory was bittersweet for Soloist Samantha Stevenson, 28, who was the victim of a cruel campaign on Facebook and Twitter.
She was branded a 'skank' on internet forums and her tattoos were described as looking like 'temp garish things' that made one Twitter user 'balk'.
But she has vowed to celebrate her chart success by adding a remembrance poppy tattoo to her collection of bright inkings."

A prominent Egyptian blogger freed by an Egyptian judge on Sunday lambasted the military government and said "nothing has changed" since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power in February. "It's not the end of the case, that I am out. Terrorist Twitter pages should be taken down
Wednesday, December 21, 2011, 04:27 AM - Twitter, News Stories This week, a lot of news sites and blogs are talking about the Twitter accounts of terrorist organizations like that of Somalia's al-Shabab, which I wrote about earlier in the month.? Al-Shabab joined after Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir?made headlines on Twitter for warning Somali civilians of imminent attacks.Instead of the news sites and blogs talking about the account as if it?s some neat online novelty, the focus is finally on whether the account is a threat.
Uri Friedman over at Foreign Policy?s Passport blog has a good roundup of the online discussion that has been taking place.
In fact, it's recruitment -- not rebranding -- that has the Obama administration worried about al-Shabab's new Twitter presence. When the group first launched the account, Wired noted that "journalists, terrorism researchers, and aid workers make up the lion's share of its early followers, not eager Muslim youth." But the New York Times reports today that officials across the U.S. government are concerned that al-Shabab's account, which now boasts over 5,000 followers, could reach potential recruits in the West with its scathing and sophisticated English-language tweeting. "American officials say they may have the legal authority to demand that Twitter close the Shabab's account," the paper explains (Twitter declined to comment).?
If the government does indeed pursue legal action, the Times notes, it could open up a "debate about over the line between free speech and support for terrorism." And, indeed, the debate is already underway. In what appears to be a response to the Times piece today, al-Shabab tweeted, "With millions of websites & newspapers disseminating their propaganda, the #US couldn't endure to hear the real truth. What a travesty!" (The group also called an earlier Times article on its Twitter account an "elaborate, sentimental piece of writing accentuating the oft-repeated canard that passes for #Journalism these days.")
Me, personally, I?m all for shutting down Al-Shabab?s account.
Like I?ve posted about before, Twitter has been allowing other terrorist organizations like the Taliban to freely post hateful messages in violation of Twitter?s own TOS.?

Of course, Twitter?s approach to this whole matter is to do nothing, fully knowing that terrorists are among its users.
The company is swift to take down user accounts for posting duplicate messages or other minor rule violations, but accounts that promote violence are allowed to remain.

Facebook releases military social media guide

Facebook has released its own social media guide for military families. ?The organization Blue Star Families helped to develop the guide in hopes of showing people how best to use Facebook, while navigating operational and personal security issues. ?
A Q&A was posted on the Facebook post announcing the guide's release. Don Paul, a former Marine who is also Facebook's Vice President of Online Operations, answered why he thought it was a good time to release the guide.
"We thought the holiday season was the best time to release the guide since it can be a challenging time for many military families, who may have a family member deployed or are stationed far from home. We hope that the guide gives military families tips and best practices for using Facebook and will help them share the holidays with friends and family no matter where they are located."
The guide is only about?9-pages of information and is divided into six sections called: 6 ways military families can use social media and maintain security.
But it really should be called: 6 ways military families can use Facebook.?
1. Stay in touch with family and friends.
2. Stay informed of DoD, branch and unit policies and relevant information.
3. Learn to maintain Operational Security by knowing what to and what not to communicate.
4. Learn to maintain Personal Security on Facebook through privacy and account settings.
5. Thank your military family and friends and stay up-to-date on Facebook resources.
6. Use Facebook as a professional development resource.
The guide isn?t anything new in terms of understanding op sec guidelines, but it?s useful for Facebook users, especially considering the social networking site has had its own share of privacy issues.
The DoD has been publishing its own guides for years, which can be found at the DoD Social Media Hub.
